My Personal Story with CBD
I’ve been a registered dietitian with my own private practice in NYC for over 12 years. One thing that I love about my field of work is that there is always more to learn. Whether its changing my views on fat and sugar or opening my mind to learn about the cannabis plant- I’m constantly evolving as a professional.
I never thought much about cannabis for the first 9 years in my career outside hemp seeds on top of my yogurt. Personally, I wasn’t into smoking pot as I didn’t enjoy the THC paranoid-feeling that I experienced.
When my husband Todd, was diagnosed with a debilitating autoimmune disease that prevents him from walking or standing any period of time, I used my nutrition knowledge to help. Working with his doctors, we tried major diet changes to see if it would offer him any relief. None did and that was a hard pill for me to swallow.
Around 3 years ago, I started hearing more information about CBD. Mainly for it’s incredible benefits with epilepsy, but also with pain. So I found a brand that seemed legit and had Todd start taking it in the beginning of the summer. I had him on a high dose on CBD from hemp, so the THC was minimal and he had no side effects. There weren’t any major noticeable differences at first but he kept taking it.
About a month in, we had bought our oldest daughter her first bike without training wheels. Anyone with kids knows what a physical job it is to teach a kid how to ride a bike and I assumed it would be mainly my responsibility because just the 2-block walk to the park was the most Todd could normally do. But when we got to the park, Todd said he could keep going. And going. And going until she was up and on her own. He was exhausted and hurting by the time we got back home, but we both could not believe what he was able to do.
Nothing else had changed aside from Todd taking CBD. So that prompted me to do some more research and the more I learned I was blown away. Learning that our bodies are wired with an endocannabinoid system (ECS) that is meant to be utilizing the benefits of the cannabis plant was brand new to me- but it started making sense. Understanding the receptor sites on the ECS and how they help the body with pain, answered what happened with Todd and the bike.
I decided to go ahead and get some formal training on cannabis but especially to learn about CBD. Once I became a certified holistic cannabis practitioner, I was able to comfortably bring CBD into my private practice. I recommend full spectrum CBD made from organic hemp oil it to my clients who have anxiety, chronic pain, trouble sleeping and even the ones who just want to feel a little better.
